Avoiding accidental clicks Pt. 1: Keeping the right distance - Inside AdSense

In the past, we've talked about ad placements that are prone to generate invalid clicks. In a past post, for example, Mike noted that publishers should be careful about placing ads too close to navigational controls or other clickable page elements.

It's in the best interest of the user, advertiser, and publisher to avoid implementations that lead to invalid click activity. As you can imagine, users aren't very happy if they accidentally click an ad instead of a link on your page and are directed away from your site. Advertisers also don’t want to be charged for a click that a user made accidentally (though of course we do not charge advertisers for invalid clicks that we detect). And why should publishers care? Well, if we see that most of the clicks coming from your pages are invalid, we may need to disable your account to protect our advertisers.

One type of site we wanted to talk about are Flash-based game sites. Playing games on these sites, you'll notice that ads are often placed very close to the Flash player where the game is played. Publishers may reason that they're providing maximum value to advertisers by placing their ads very close to the area where their users are focused. However, many of these Flash games are played with a mouse, and the action in the games can lead users to do a lot of rapid cursor movements and clicking. We've seen many cases where ads were placed too closely to where the action was taking place, generating many accidental clicks.

Since each game and site are unique, we can't advise publishers on an exact distance between ads and games, but we do recommend a minimum distance of 150 pixels between the Flash player and ads.

Our system will show the ads that will generate you the most profit, whether they're from these Google-certified ad networks or the AdWords program. As a reminder, all Google-certified ad networks are required to adhere to our standards for user privacy, ad quality, and speed. Finally, some ad networks use tools similar to Google's interest-based advertising to show more relevant ads to users on the sites they visit. Earlier this year we simplified the process for monetizing your blog by adding a “Monetize” tab in the Blogger app. We started with AdSense, which allows you to add contextual advertising to your pages; more recently we added AdSense for Feeds to help you generate revenue from the distribution of your blog via RSS and Atom. Today we launched a third option: direct integration with Amazon Associates to search Amazon’s product catalog and add links to products that earn you commissions when your readers buy products you recommend.

With this feature, you can search Amazon directly from the Blogger editor and add pictures and links to Amazon products right into your posts. Your readers will earn you commissions whenever they buy the products you recommend, and if you don’t already have an Amazon Associates account, you can sign up for one for free without leaving Blogger.

If you’ve ever written a blog post about a book, recommended a gadget, or reviewed a toy you bought for your kids, you’ve likely gone through the process of drafting the post, opening up a separate window to go to find a site that sells the product, then going back to Blogger to paste the link to the product into the post editor.

Starting today, you can search the Amazon product catalog without leaving the Blogger interface and insert links to the products you find into your posts. Not only is the process of linking to products more efficient, but Amazon makes it easy for you to earn money whenever your readers actually buy the products you write about. This is known as an “affiliate program”, and it’s designed to let you recommend products you like to your audience — if they buy the product, you’ll earn a commission on that purchase. Is Google Fair to AdSense Publishers?

There has been much discussion lately on blogs, forums and even the AdSense Support Forum from publishers reporting that they've seen some pretty big drops in AdSense revenues.

By now, everyone should know about the global economic crisis and there's no denying that the US is in a recession. Advertising gets hit hard during a recession and many publishers are taking notice.

I decided to take a look at numbers Google files with the SEC related to it's advertising and AdSense in particular to see what's going on. I've included some charts to help interpret the data. The last quarterly report filed was in September and the annual report hasn't been filed yet. I'll revisit this subject when it does.

From what I've seen, Google seems to be very fair to it's publishers in some ways, maybe could improve in some other areas but most importantly, there might be cause for concern if you rely on your AdSense revenue in these tough times.

How much does Google keep from AdSense clicks?

This is likely different from publisher to publisher, especially when it comes to those that get invited to be premier publishers and can negotiate their own terms, but Google does list the revenue generated by AdSense and how much goes to the AdSense publishers in their SEC filings. The chart on the right shows the publishers share in red and Google's share in blue.

Over the past 4 years, Goolge has paid out an average of just over 80% to AdSense publishers. Beofre they were only giving publishers a little less than 80%. Considering the infrastructure and the quality of their targeting, that seems like a good deal. If you have a website with significant traffic that appeals to advertisers, you could do better with directly selling ads yourself, but even big publishers use AdSense because the small percentage they take is justified by the time saved. Big publishers likely have negotiated better terms and from reading the 10-Q statements, it seems that some publishers even have guaranteed payments defined in their contracts.

Google has been taking a smaller cut from AdSense

If you look close at the chart Google has been taking a smaller cut from AdSense in the past 4 quarters. 88% in the first two and 89% in the last two have gone to publishers. That may seem like good news at first read, but consider again that publishers have been seeing decreased revenue even with the increase in share. We also don't know how evenly that increase was distributed. It could have gone to all the premier publishers to meet contractual obligations or it could have gone to only regular publishers to help offset declining cost per click.

The good news is that Google seems to be willing to soften the blow to publishers a bit. Maybe they think this will only be temporary, until things calm down but many economists aren't expecting a quick economic recovery. Regardless, that's a nearly $120 million dollar hit they took to either keep publishers from bailing or to honor their contracts.

One of the things I've read in most of the quarterly reports is that advertising revenue is increasing due to increase clicks and not because of the increased price per click. If you want to keep your AdSense revenue up, you need to keep getting more traffic and more clicks.

I've seen people ask this different places. This next chart shows what Google earns in advertising revenue from it's own sites in blue, the total revenue generated by Google Network web sites (AdSense publishers) in red, and the revenue share for publishers in yellow. Values are in thousands.

As you can see, ad revenue on Google's own sites has been climbing regularly while AdSense revenues haven't been growing as fast and have actually leveled off the last 2 quarters. In the first two quarters of 2004, AdSense publishers generated more revenue than Google did on their own sites. Now Google brings in twice as much revenue from their own sites.

I don't agree with few of below points as mentioned by John Chow.

#1) The CPM’s are Weak

Yes CPM’s are dropping everywhere and the days of $50CPM are distant memories, but the CPM’s with AdSense always seem to be low. Why is it that the CPM’s suck if you are publisher, and the CPC are so high when you are on the other side as an advertiser? Oh yah, they have a market cap of $175,000,000,000. Yes that is 175 billion with 9 zeros. Why don’t they share publicly what percentage of the revenue they actually give to the publishers? Can you think of a reason why they would hide this? Every single ad Network and every single affiliate company in the world tells you what percentage payout they give you. Google is the only one that doesn’t. What kind of partner, doesn’t share that information with you? It should be illegal not to disclose.

#2) They Look Like Crap

This one is baffling more than anything. How can a company with over 20,000 employees not come up with a banner that looks more ascetically pleasing to the eye? The customizations are weak. Colors and rounded corners? Come on G, come up with slick looking ads! Even the Graphic ads, have the self promotion, ‘Ads by Google’ that makes them look ugly. Do you really need to advertise AdSense more? Thousands of top bloggers have pulled them off their site for the simple reason of how bad they look on their site, and you should too if you want your site to look more professional.

#3) Inverse Relationship to Revenue

After meeting and talking to hundreds of site owners over the years and meeting folks who say they either make money or don’t make money off AdSense, I come to this conclusion. AdSense revenue is inversely related to the quality of your content. If you have great content, readers are going to stick around your site and read more but if you content quality is weak they are going to keep looking elsewhere and click on the Google Ads with the keywords of what they are really looking for. So if you have keyword rich weak content, you will actually make more money with AdSense.

#4) PSA’s

Also known as Public Service Ads, these ads show up when Google can’t find a match for your site, and they normally only show up when you have the default set to display only graphical ads. OK, I can be as charitable as the next guy, but not only do you not make any money off these ads, they look like crap. I’ve yet to see a nicely designed PSA. Here is a tip to all you charities out there, hire a professional designer, or get a professional graphic designer to ‘donate’ his services and get some nice looking banner ads designed. Otherwise, keep those lousy PSA’s off my site.

#5) Anyone is Approved

This is the biggest joke with AdSense and the reason that the web is filled with millions of completely useless shitty sites. AdSense is the cause. Yes, the biggest search engine in the world, the folks who pride themselves on “helping your organize information” is the #1 culprit of enabling anyone to create a crap site and make money off it. Anyone can put up a website, plagiarize, steal and copy content and then slap on AdSense ads to potentially make a few bucks. Almost every single ad network in the world has some type of approval process and quality control, but not AdSense, everyone is welcome. Why? Google’s revenue is the ultimate long tail and those hundreds of millions of spammers are all soldiers in Google’s revenue army, all splogging and generating pennies that add up to billions.

#6) It Makes You Lazy

AdSense is a crutch for the lazy publisher. It is kind of like crack cocaine, when you get a small taste of it, you keep coming back for more, even when you know it is bad for you. You think, oh well, at least it is some money. I never hear anyone saying. OMG, I am making a killing off AdSense on my ONE site! The few bucks you get a month keeps you on a drip feed life support so you don’t go out and sell your own ads.

#7) They keep your Money

This is one of the things that really irks me with Google and should make you mad too. How many millions of dollars of other people’s money do they have in the bank that they will never pay out? They used to have a lower payouts lever and now it needs to be $100. I guarantee that there are litterly millions of small publishers with super low traffic that will NEVER hit the minimum payout level and just give up or remove it from their site. What happens to this money? Google keeps it. Hmm? I’m guessing that the guy in the 3rd world country with the $38 dollars sitting idle in his account needs the money more than they do? They should be forced to pay out all monies owning to small site owners!

Enough is enough. Let’s convince Google to disclose what percentage of your revenue they keep and force them to pay out all monies owed to small site owners.

Beware of Phishing Attack on Google Adsense accounts

With all of the talk about Adsense users finding their accounts disabled lately, users should be aware of a phishing scam playing on Adsense clients’ greatest fear: losing their account.

Today I received an email purporting to be from Google telling me my account was disabled. And frankly, it’s the closest I’ve ever come to falling for a phishing attempt. That’s partly do to circumstance and partly because the scam is fairly well done.

On the circumstance side, I had an unusually high number of clicks on one of my sites yesterday. It seemed to good to be true, so I was afraid something was amiss.

On the scam side, the phishers appear to have copied an actual email Google uses to inform users their accounts have been disabled. Or at least something very close. There’s no broken English. Here’s what it says:

Hello,

While going through our records recently, we found that your AdSense
account has posed a significant risk to our AdWords advertisers. Since
keeping your account in our publisher network may financially damage our
advertisers in the future, we’ve decided to disable your account.

Please understand that we consider this a necessary step to protect the
interests of both our advertisers and our other AdSense publishers. We
realize the inconvenience this may cause you, and we thank you in advance
for your understanding and cooperation.

If you have any questions about your account or the actions we’ve taken,
please do not reply to this email. You can find more information by
visiting
https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=57153.

The email came from adsense-adclicks-noreply@google.com, which apparently is a real Google email address that it uses to contact customers, at least according to a couple blog posts. (Surprisingly, Gmail didn’t warn me that the email was actually sent from someone other than the return address like it usually does. But it did put the message in my spam folder.)

Completely fill your Google Adsense signup form with accurate information and make sure the name and address should be the same as it appears on your CNIC and other official documents. Also complete the signup for Flixya.

It is a proven and tested method to get your Google Adsense ID without having a blog or website. Now, you will have to wait for adsense account approval it will take 4-5 days to get it approved.

Step 2: Make your first blog using Blogger.com

Blogs are the online diaries or journals which anyone can use to publish his/her own choice content. The content can be any article, picture, videos etc. There are several platform where you can make your own blog but Blogger.com provides the simplest method to create a blog and it is most commonly used for this purpose.

By the time you get your Google Adsense ID’s approval, you can make your plan about creating a profitable blog. Remember, if you are not planning it means you are planning to fail. Instead of creating a blog on the topic which you are not familiar with, create a blog for which you are passionate about. For example if you are good in cooking, you should make your blog about cooking tips and if you are passionate about mobile phones then you should create a blog about latest mobile phones. a. Sign up for Blogger.com. (Make sure you are signed in with the same gmail account)

Step 3: Integrate your Adsense Account with your Blog

It is not a good idea to display google ads on newly established blog, so make sure you have enough content on your blog which is good to attract readers. Once your Google Adsense account is approved, you can integrate it in your blog to display relevant ads by Google. This is how you can integrate your adsense account with your blog: -

1. Click on the Monetize button (Make sure you are logged in to your blogger account and you have selected the blog where you can see the Monetize button)

2. Choose Display ads in my sidebar and posts (and click next)

3. Enter your PIN (i.e. gmail id and postal code or last 5 digits of phone numbers)

Note:- You can also integrate your adsense account with blogger through Layout >> Page Element >> Add a Gadget >> Adsense and again you can mention your email and PIN to get new ads by Google in your blog.

I shared this list of Latest Highest Paying Keywords for 2009 earlier and a lot of bloggers and webmasters said that all the keywords mentioned in this list does not belong to their niche (target market), so it is pointless to use this list. I completely agree with you all, that such highest paying keywords are related with some financial / legal / medical niche and you can not utilize this list to your blog or website provided you share the same niche.

In this post, I am going to disclose you how you can choose highest paying keywords which are related with your blog or website. Let me first explain you the importance of selecting highest paying keywords and the amount of difference it can make to your Google Adsense earning.

For example, if you are going to write an article on say “Affiliate Marketing” and you really don’t know about the highest paying keywords and you write complete article without incorporating any keywords with high value. Haris Nadeem, the Guru of Blogging in Pakistan

There is no better way of learning blogging tips and tricks than learning it directly from the blogging Gurus. When we talk about Gurus of Blogging in Pakistan, the first few names which comes into my mind must include Haris Nadeem. Google Pakistan and CIO had been showcasing Haris Nadeem in their bloggers meetups as a role model and inspiration for new bloggers because of his brilliant achievements in Blogging at a very short span of time.

Haris Nadeem is included in Top 30 Earning Bloggers Globally and he is also listed in Top Young Bloggers List.

I have also approached him for an interview but recently PakCrunch guys i.e. Imran Hassan and Umair Khan Jadoon took the lead and they took a wonderful interview at CIOWebstudio, which you can watch it here as well.

In this post, I would also review Haris Nadeem’s blog i.e. SizzledCore.com and share some of its statistics and tactics. If you have a close look at its home page, you will notice that it has a very beautifully designed eye-catching logo right on top which creates a good positive image of his blog at first glance. The home page shows five recent posts with “Read More” option with a lot of white space so that the reader can easily go through the summary of all five posts without getting distracted by any Google Adsense Ad except for a search bar at the right column.

The tactic here is clear, that he doesn’t wants to let the readers leave so early, by clicking on the Google Adsense ad. He want’s his readers to explore more about his blog and for that matter he has provided two column list of 24 categories at the right side but no recent posts option.

The right side of his home page also have options to subscribe via email, twitter, and facebook. He has mentioned the importance of social networking sites and he is spot on here by providing an option to Become A Fan on Facebook. You’ll notice a deliberate blank space right below the Facebook Become a Fan option till the bottom side of his Blog because he doesn’t want to look overcrowded with so many options. Although, a Google Friend Connect could easily be added right below the Facebook Become a Fan box with no harm at all.

As soon as you either click on one of the five latest post or the categories provided at the home page, you will notice two large rectangle 336×280 ads, one at the top, below the headline and the other one at the end of every post. These are the two most possible earning spots where he is making a lot of money apart from search bar and link units at the top.

If you check out it’s statistics at Alexa.com you’ll notice that his blog is getting around 20,000 visitors per day which is the key here to make money. As he also mentioned in his interview that earning is directly proportional to traffic, which simply means “More Traffic=More Money”.
